Make the most of your wedding lessons

Wedding dance lessons are a great way to prepare for your wedding and make you more confident on the day. To make the most of your lessons with us, we’ve prepared a few tips from some of our past couples and teachers.

Before the lesson

  • Think about what you want to get out of your dance lessons. Do you want something complicated, or something simple? Have you seen something on Insta or YouTube that you like? If you have some ideas about what you might like, it will help our instructors personalise your dance. You should also have a song chosen.

  • Think about the frequency of lessons. Are you going to be having lessons every week, every fortnight or occasionally? It’s good to let your instructor know this from the outset so they can plan accordingly.

  • The more we know about the wedding, the better. Your instructor may ask about these things:

    • The size of the dance floor and layout of the room

    • Who else might be involved in the dance (ie the wedding party)

    • How the song will be played (digitally, or by a band)

    • What type of clothing you’ll be wearing for the dance - this is important as some dresses and jackets can restrict what type of movements you can do.

Getting ready for the lesson

  • Wear clothing that you can move easily in and is comfortable. It would be ideal to wear the shoes that you’ll wear for the wedding. It’s really important to practice in these shoes at least a few times. For some of the lessons, you’ll want to wear something similar to what you will be wearing for the dance.

  • Arrive at the studio with 15 minutes to spare. Parking can be tricky, and you’ll want to stretch, warm up, put on shoes if you have them, and sit to clear your mind of distractions. After your first lesson, you can ask your instructor how early they get to the studio to see if there is more time to practice before your lesson.

  • Make sure you’ve eaten, and bring a water bottle. You’ll want to be free from distractions in your lesson, such as phones, hunger and other things in life.

  • You should bring a note book to make notes at the end of your lesson. This will help with retaining information later on.

At the lesson

  • Our instructors are highly knowledgeable so you’ll receive a lot of info in your lesson. Feel free to ask them to summarise the key points at the end.

  • Ask your instructor if you can video the new routine. Name your video and save to a dedicated folder on your phone for easy finding later.

  • Make sure you book your next lesson before you leave. You may like to stay around after the lesson to practice - this is depending on whether the studio is open and available.

After the lesson

  • During the week, make time to practice - whether that be at home, one of our practice classes, or at the studio at any time of the week with our practice hire subscription.

  • Whilst practicing, write down any questions you have for your next lesson and tell your instructor up front.

  • Be sure to give your instructor feedback on how you’re receiving the lessons and the dance. In most cases they are willing to alter their teaching style and routines to suit your needs.
