Medal Day

Looking for a way to step up your ballroom to the next level??

Join our next ‘medal day’ - held every 6 months at Ballroom Baby.

At our medal days, our students (both adult and kids) will perform between 1 and 5 dances with their instructor, in front of an examiner who will then provide them a score and feedback on their dancing, with a medal presented for all passing students. Medals are the best way to challenge yourself and get to the next level of your ballroom dance journey.

The medal day is also a spectator event and you are welcome to invite friends and family. When it’s your time, you will walk out onto the floor with your instructor, perform your dances, present to the examiner and then walk off. The medal day is followed later in the week by a ‘Gala Night’ where we present our passing students with their report, score and trophy. Higher level medal students are also invited to perform a dance at the Gala Night.

Dances?

Ballroom Baby Geelong uses the ‘Australian Dancing Society’ medal system and we have a recommended list of dances to complete for each award. Beginners would start at either the Proficiency (1 dance) or Crystal Level (2 dances) and work their way up. Dances are covered in either private lessons, or our group classes. If you learn in a class, it is recommended that you have some private lessons to refine the dances. For reference, 102 classes and routines are equivalent to Crystal Level, 103 is equivalent to Bronze Level, and so on.

Outfit?

You need to dress up for your medal examination. We say, wear something that you might wear to a wedding, including either a dress or slacks, a shirt, blouse, tie or bowtie, etc. You will also need proper dance shoes.

We have a style guide on our website, as well as the images on display at our studio. From gold level and up, the medal candidates should look into hiring or buying competitive ballroom / latin outfits.

I am interested! What next?

Speak to our staff first. They can advise you which dances to start with and make a plan (including private lessons). You can register via our website at least six weeks prior. There is a fee for the award and exam. If you sign up, and decide closer to the date you are not ready, you can defer your registration to the next date.

To learn to dance at Ballroom Baby, we suggest the best way to progress is by participating in our annual medal days (usually run twice per year). To participate, register below by the cut off date. On the medal day, you will perform between 1 and 5 dances with your instructor in front of an examiner at the studio. Each participant will receive a score, critique report and medal to acknowledge their achievement. We provide a supportive and vibrant environment to complete medals in.
